For enhanced safety, the front and rear seat shoulder belts of the Nissan Xterra are height-adjustable to accommodate a wide variety of driver and passenger heights. A better fit can prevent injuries and the increased comfort also encourages passengers to buckle up. The Toyota 4Runner doesn’t offer height-adjustable rear seat belts.

Both the Xterra and the 4Runner have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, head airbags, front seatbelt pretensioners, height-adjustable front shoulder belts, plastic fuel tanks, four-wheel antilock brakes, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding and available four-wheel drive.

The Nissan Xterra may be more efficient, handle and accelerate better because it weighs about 250 to 400 pounds less than the Toyota 4Runner.

The Xterra’s instruments include an oil pressure gauge and a temperature gauge – which could save your engine! Often ‘idiot lights’ don’t warn you until damage has been done. The 4Runner does not have an oil pressure gauge.

To improve rear visibility by keeping the rear window clear, the Xterra has a standard rear fixed intermittent wiper with a full on position. The rear wiper standard on the 4Runner only has an intermittent setting, so in a hard rain visibility isn’t as good.
