Both the Altima Sedan and the 300 have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, side-impact head airbags, front seatbelt pretensioners, height-adjustable front shoulder belts, plastic fuel tanks, four-wheel antilock brakes, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, available crash mitigating brakes, daytime running lights, lane departure warning systems, blind spot warning systems, rearview cameras and rear cross-path warning.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration does 35 MPH front crash tests on new vehicles. In this test, results indicate that the Nissan Altima Sedan is safer than the Chrysler 300:

A significantly tougher test than their original offset frontal crash test, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety does 40 MPH small overlap frontal offset crash tests. In this test, where only 25% of the total width of the vehicle is struck, results indicate that the Nissan Altima Sedan is safer than the 300:

For its top level performance in all IIHS frontal, side, rear impact and roof-crush tests, with its optional front crash prevention system, and its available headlight’s “Acceptable” rating, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety grants the Altima Sedan its highest rating: “Top Pick Plus” for 2017, a rating granted to only 46 vehicles tested by the IIHS. The 300 was not even a standard “Top Pick” for 2017.

Warranty Comparison

The Altima Sedan’s 5 year corrosion warranty has no mileage limitations, but the corrosion warranty on the 300 runs out after 100,000 miles.

Reliability Comparison

For smoother operation, better efficiency and fewer moving parts, the engines in the Altima Sedan have an overhead cam design, rather than the old pushrod design of the 5.7 V8 in the 300.

A reliable vehicle saves its owner time, money and trouble. Nobody wants to be stranded or have to be without their vehicle while it’s being repaired. Consumer Reports predicts that the Altima Sedan’s reliability will be 63% better than the 300.

J.D. Power and Associates rated the Altima Sedan second among midsize cars in their 2016 Initial Quality Study. The 300 isn’t in the top three in its category.

J.D. Power and Associates’ 2016 Initial Quality Study of new car owners surveyed provide the statistics that show that Nissan vehicles are better in initial quality than Chrysler vehicles. J.D. Power ranks Nissan 10th in initial quality, above the industry average. With 14 more problems per 100 vehicles, Chrysler is ranked 19th, below the industry average.

Fuel Economy and Range Comparison

On the EPA test cycle the Altima Sedan 3.5 V6 gets better fuel mileage than the 300 RWD with its standard V6 (22 city/32 hwy vs. 19 city/31 hwy).

To lower fuel costs and make buying fuel easier, the Nissan Altima Sedan uses regular unleaded gasoline. The 300 with the 5.7 V8 engine requires mid-grade for maximum efficiency, which can cost 5 to 40 cents more per gallon.

Tires and Wheels Comparison

The Altima Sedan has a standard easy tire fill system. When inflating the tires, the vehicle’s integrated tire pressure sensors keep track of the pressure as the tires fill and tell the driver when the tires are inflated to the proper pressure. The 300 doesn’t offer vehicle monitored tire inflation.

Suspension and Handling Comparison

The Altima Sedan 3.5 SL handles at .87 G’s, while the 300S pulls only .83 G’s of cornering force in a Road and Track skidpad test.

The Altima Sedan 3.5 SL goes through Road and Track’s slalom 3.4 MPH faster than the 300S (66 vs. 62.6 MPH).

For better maneuverability, the Altima Sedan 2.5/2.5 S’ turning circle is 2.6 feet tighter than the 300’s (36.1 feet vs. 38.7 feet). The Altima Sedan SV/SR/SL/3.5’s turning circle is 1.3 feet tighter than the 300’s (37.4 feet vs. 38.7 feet).

Chassis Comparison

The Nissan Altima Sedan may be more efficient, handle and accelerate better because it weighs about 800 to 900 pounds less than the Chrysler 300.

The Altima Sedan is 6.7 inches shorter than the 300, making the Altima Sedan easier to handle, maneuver and park in tight spaces.

To almost totally eliminate engine vibration in the passenger area, the Altima Sedan V6 has an electronically controlled liquid-filled front engine mount and conventional liquid-filled engine mounts (standard liquid front mount on other versions of the Altima Sedan). A computer-controlled electric current in the liquid changes its viscosity, allowing the mount to dampen the engine completely at all RPMs. The 300 uses conventional solid rubber engine mounts.

The front grille of the Altima Sedan 2.5 uses electronically controlled shutters to close off airflow and reduce drag when less engine cooling is needed. This helps improve highway fuel economy. The 300 doesn’t offer active grille shutters.

The Altima Sedan has 1.4 inches more front headroom and 3.2 inches more front legroom than the 300.

Cargo Capacity Comparison

A low lift-over trunk design makes loading and unloading the Altima Sedan easier. The Altima Sedan’s trunk lift-over height is 26.5 inches, while the 300’s liftover is 30.1 inches.

With its sedan body style, valet key, locking rear seatbacks and remote trunk release lockout, the Altima offers cargo security. The 300’s non-lockable folding seat and non-lockable remote release defeat cargo security.

Ergonomics Comparison

If the front windows are left down on the Altima Sedan the driver can raise them using the key in the outside lock cylinder. On a hot day the driver can lower the windows from outside the vehicle using the key in the outside lock cylinder or the keyless remote. The driver of the 300 can only raise the windows from inside the vehicle, with the ignition on.

Economic Advantages Comparison

According to The Car Book by Jack Gillis, the Altima Sedan is less expensive to operate than the 300 because typical repairs cost much less on the Altima Sedan than the 300, including $79 less for a water pump, $563 less for an alternator, $74 less for front brake pads, $85 less for a timing belt/chain and $1107 less for a power steering pump.

IntelliChoice estimates that five-year ownership costs (depreciation, financing, insurance, fuel, fees, repairs and maintenance) for the Nissan Altima Sedan will be $6581 to $7867 less than for the Chrysler 300.

Recommendations Comparison

J.D. Power and Associates rated the Altima Sedan second among midsize cars in owner reported satisfaction. This includes how well the vehicle performs and satisfies its owner’s expectations. The 300 isn’t in the top three in its category.

The Nissan Altima Sedan outsold the Chrysler 300 by over five to one during the 2016 model year.
