Safety Comparison

The Rogue SL offers optional Forward Emergency Braking, which use forward mounted sensors to warn the driver of a possible collision ahead. If the driver doesn’t react and the system determines a collision is imminent, it automatically applies the brakes at full-force in order to reduce the force of the crash or avoid it altogether. The Encore has a collision warning system without the crash-mitigating brake feature which could reduce stopping distances.

The Rogue (except S) offers an optional Around View® Monitor to allow the driver to see objects all around the vehicle on a screen. The Encore only offers a rear monitor and front and rear parking sensors that beep or flash a light. That doesn’t help with obstacles to the sides.

Both the Rogue and the Encore have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, side-impact head airbags, front seatbelt pretensioners, front wheel drive, height adjustable front shoulder belts, four-wheel antilock brakes, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, daytime running lights, rearview cameras, available all wheel drive, lane departure warning systems, blind spot warning systems and rear cross-path warning.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration does side impact tests on new vehicles. In this test, which crashes the vehicle into a flat barrier at 38.5 MPH, results indicate that the Nissan Rogue is safer than the Buick Encore:

For its top level performance in all IIHS frontal, side, rear impact and roof-crush tests, with its optional front crash prevention system, and its headlight’s “Acceptable” rating, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety grants the Rogue its highest rating: “Top Pick Plus” for 2017, a rating granted to only 46 vehicles tested by the IIHS. The Encore was last qualified as only a “Top Pick” in 2016.

Engine Comparison

The Rogue’s standard 2.5 DOHC 4 cyl. produces 32 more horsepower (170 vs. 138) and 27 lbs.-ft. more torque (175 vs. 148) than the Encore’s standard 1.4 turbo 4 cyl. The Rogue’s 2.5 DOHC 4 cyl. produces 17 more horsepower (170 vs. 153) than the Encore’s optional 1.4 turbo 4 cyl. The Rogue Hybrid’s standard 2.0 DOHC 4 cyl. hybrid produces 23 more horsepower (176 vs. 153) than the Encore’s optional 1.4 turbo 4 cyl.

Regenerative brakes improve the Rogue Hybrid’s fuel efficiency by converting inertia back into energy instead of wasting it. The Encore doesn’t offer a regenerative braking system.

Brakes and Stopping Comparison

The Rogue’s standard front and rear disc brakes are vented to help dissipate heat for shorter stops with less fading. The rear discs on the Encore are solid, not vented.

Tires and Wheels Comparison

For better traction, the Rogue has larger tires than the Encore (225/65R17 vs. 215/55R18).

For better ride, handling and brake cooling the Rogue SL offers optional 19-inch wheels. The Encore’s largest wheels are only 18-inches.

The Rogue has a standard easy tire fill system. When inflating the tires, the vehicle’s integrated tire pressure sensors keep track of the pressure as the tires fill and tell the driver when the tires are inflated to the proper pressure. The Encore doesn’t offer vehicle monitored tire inflation.

Changing a flat tire near traffic can be dangerous and inconvenient. The run-flat tires available on the Rogue can be driven up to 50 miles without any air pressure, allowing you to drive to a service station for a repair. The Encore doesn’t offer run-flat tires.

Suspension and Handling Comparison

For superior ride and handling, the Nissan Rogue has fully independent front and rear suspensions. An independent suspension allows the wheels to follow the road at the best angle for gripping the pavement, without compromising ride comfort. The Buick Encore has a rear torsion beam axle, with a semi-independent rear suspension.

The Rogue has standard front and rear stabilizer bars, which help keep the Rogue flat and controlled during cornering. The Encore’s suspension doesn’t offer a rear stabilizer bar.

For a smoother ride and more stable handling, the Rogue’s wheelbase is 5.9 inches longer than on the Encore (106.5 inches vs. 100.6 inches).

For better handling and stability, the track (width between the wheels) on the Rogue is 2.2 inches wider in the front and 2.2 inches wider in the rear than on the Encore.

For greater off-road capability the Rogue has a 2 inches greater minimum ground clearance than the Encore (8.2 vs. 6.2 inches), allowing the Rogue to travel over rougher terrain without being stopped or damaged.

Passenger Space Comparison

The Rogue offers optional seating for 7 passengers; the Encore can only carry 5.

The Rogue has 33.7 cubic feet more passenger volume than the Encore (126.5 vs. 92.8).

The Rogue has 2 inches more front headroom, 2.2 inches more front legroom, 2.3 inches more front hip room, 2.4 inches more front shoulder room, 2.1 inches more rear legroom, 2 inches more rear hip room and 3.3 inches more rear shoulder room than the Encore.

For enhanced passenger comfort on long trips the Rogue’s available middle row seats recline. The Encore’s rear seats don’t recline.

To make loading and unloading groceries and cargo easier when your hands are full, the Rogue’s cargo door can be opened just by waving your foot, leaving your hands completely free. The Rogue also (except S) offers an optional power cargo door, which opens and closes automatically by pressing a button or just by waving your foot. The Encore doesn’t offer a power or hands-free opening cargo door.

Ergonomics Comparison

If the windows are left down on the Rogue the driver can raise them all using the key in the outside lock cylinder; on a hot day the driver can lower the windows. The driver of the Encore can only operate the windows from inside the vehicle, with the ignition on.

The Rogue has a standard locking fuel cap with a remote release located convenient to the driver. A locking fuel door helps prevent vandalism, such as sugar in the tank and fuel theft. The Encore doesn’t offer a locking fuel door.

While driving with high beams on, sensitive light sensors standard on the Rogue SL detect other vehicles which could be blinded and automatically switch to low beams. The Encore doesn’t offer automatic dimming high beams.

Both the Rogue and the Encore offer rear vents. For greater rear passenger comfort, the Rogue has standard rear air conditioning vents to keep rear occupants cool in summer or warm in winter. The Encore doesn’t offer rear air conditioning vents, only heat vents.

To keep a safe, consistent following distance, the Rogue SL offers an optional Intelligent Cruise Control, which alters the speed of the vehicle without driver intervention. This allows the driver to use cruise control more safely without constantly having to disengage it when approaching slower traffic. The Encore doesn’t offer an adaptive cruise control.

Economic Advantages Comparison

According to The Car Book by Jack Gillis, the Rogue is less expensive to operate than the Encore because typical repairs cost less on the Rogue than the Encore, including $22 less for a water pump and $156 less for front brake pads.

IntelliChoice estimates that five-year ownership costs (depreciation, financing, insurance, fuel, fees, repairs and maintenance) for the Nissan Rogue will be $250 to $727 less than for the Buick Encore.

Recommendations Comparison

Consumer Reports® recommends the Nissan Rogue, based on reliability, safety and performance. The Buick Encore isn't recommended.

The Nissan Rogue outsold the Buick Encore by over four to one during the 2016 model year.
