While accelerating, the rear wheels of a rear-wheel drive vehicle can break loose, causing it to fishtail or even spin and lose control completely. ‘Oversteering’ or spinning in a rear wheel drive car requires counter-steering, and backing off the gas may not help.

The Altima SV/SL/Platinum’s lane departure warning system alerts a temporarily inattentive driver when the vehicle begins to leave its lane and gently nudges the vehicle back towards its lane.

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) performs roof strength tests. In that test the Altima earned the top rating of “Good” because its roof supported over four times the Altima’s weight before being crushed five inches.

A hardened steel chain, with no maintenance needs, drives the camshafts in the Altima’s engine. If a rubber cam drive belt that needs periodic replacement breaks, the engine could be severely damaged when the pistons hit the opened valves.

In heavy traffic or at stoplights the Altima’s engine automatically turns off when the vehicle is stopped, saving fuel and reducing pollution. The engine is automatically restarted when the driver gets ready to move again. (Start/Stop isn’t accounted in present EPA fuel mileage tests.)

To lower fuel costs and make buying fuel easier, the Nissan Altima uses regular unleaded gasoline (premium recommended with the 2.0 turbo 4 cyl. engine for maximum performance). Premium can cost 20 to 55 cents more per gallon.

For better traction, the Altima has large 215/60R16 standard tires. The Altima SR/Platinum’s tires are larger: 235/40R19.

The Altima S’ standard tires provide better handling because they have a low 60 series profile (height to width ratio) that provides a stiffer sidewall. The Altima SR/Platinum’s tires have a lower 40 series profile.

For better ride, handling and brake cooling the Altima S has standard 16-inch wheels. The Altima SR/Platinum has standard 19-inch wheels.

The Nissan Altima’s wheels have 5 lugs for longer wheel bearing life, less chance of rotor warping and greater strength.

The Altima has a standard easy tire fill system. When inflating the tires, the vehicle’s integrated tire pressure sensors keep track of the pressure as the tires fill and tell the driver when the tires are inflated to the proper pressure.

The Altima has a standard space-saver spare tire so you can replace a flat tire and drive to have the flat repaired or replaced. If a spare tire isn’t available you have to depend on roadside assistance and your vehicle will have to be towed.

Suspension and Handling Comparison

The Nissan Altima’s independent front suspension is much lighter than a solid front axle, which allows the Altima’s wheels to react more quickly and accurately to the road’s surface, improving both ride and handling.

The Altima Platinum’s standard easy entry system glides the driver’s seat back when the door is unlocked or the ignition is switched off, making it easier for the driver to get in and out.

The Altima’s foot pedal parking brake releases with one motion.

The Altima’s standard power windows allow the driver or passenger to lower and raise the windows without leaning over or being distracted.

The Altima’s standard driver’s power window opens or closes fully with one touch of the switch, making it more convenient at drive-up windows and toll booths. The Altima SV/SL/Platinum’s front power windows open fully with one touch of the switches, and its driver’s window also automatically closes.

The Altima’s standard power window controls are mounted on the armrest for easy access.

If the windows are left open on the Altima the driver can close them all at the outside door handle. On a hot day the driver can lower the windows at the outside door handle or from a distance using the keyless remote.

The Altima’s standard power locks allow the driver or passenger to lock or unlock all the doors at a touch without leaning over, or reaching to the back seat.

Intelligent Key standard on the Altima allows you to unlock the driver’s door, trunk and start the engine all without removing a key from pocket or purse. This eliminates searching for keys before loading groceries, getting in the vehicle in bad weather or making a hurried start to your trip.

The Altima’s speed-sensitive wipers speed up when the vehicle does, so that the driver doesn’t have to continually adjust the speed of the wipers.
