Safety Comparison

Both the Titan XD and the Sierra have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, side-impact head airbags, four-wheel antilock brakes, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, rearview cameras, available four-wheel drive, daytime running lights, blind spot warning systems, around view monitors and rear cross-path warning.

Warranty Comparison

The Titan XD comes with a full 5-year/100,000-mile basic warranty, which covers the entire truck and includes free 24-hour roadside assistance. The Sierra’s 3-year basic warranty expires 2 years and 64,000 miles sooner.

The Titan XD’s corrosion warranty is unlimited miles longer than the Sierra’s (unlimited vs. 100,000 miles).

Reliability Comparison

For smoother operation, better efficiency and fewer moving parts, the Titan XD has an overhead cam design, rather than the old pushrod design of some of the engines in the Sierra.

To reliably power the ignition and other systems and to recharge the battery, the Titan XD has a 200-amp alternator. The Sierra’s standard 170-amp alternator isn’t as powerful.

J.D. Power and Associates’ 2018 Initial Quality Study of new car owners surveyed provide the statistics that show that Nissan vehicles are better in initial quality than GMC vehicles. J.D. Power ranks Nissan 10th in initial quality, above the industry average. With 14 more problems per 100 vehicles, GMC is ranked 20th, below the industry average.

J.D. Power and Associates’ 2018 survey of the owners of three-year-old vehicles provides the long-term dependability statistics that show that Nissan vehicles are more reliable than GMC vehicles. J.D. Power ranks Nissan 10th in reliability, above the industry average. With 23 more problems per 100 vehicles, GMC is ranked 18th.

From surveys of all its subscribers, Consumer Reports’ April 2018 Auto Issue reports that Nissan vehicles are more reliable than GMC vehicles. Consumer Reports ranks Nissan 15 places higher in reliability than GMC.

Engine Comparison

The Titan XD’s 5.6 DOHC V8 produces 105 more horsepower (390 vs. 285) and 89 lbs.-ft. more torque (394 vs. 305) than the Sierra’s standard 4.3 V6. The Titan XD’s 5.6 DOHC V8 produces 80 more horsepower (390 vs. 310) and 46 lbs.-ft. more torque (394 vs. 348) than the Sierra’s optional 2.7 turbo 4 cyl. The Titan XD’s 5.6 DOHC V8 produces 35 more horsepower (390 vs. 355) and 11 lbs.-ft. more torque (394 vs. 383) than the Sierra’s optional 5.3 V8.

The Titan XD’s 5.0 turbo V8 diesel produces 25 more horsepower (310 vs. 285) and 250 lbs.-ft. more torque (555 vs. 305) than the Sierra’s standard 4.3 V6. The Titan XD’s 5.0 turbo V8 diesel produces 207 lbs.-ft. more torque (555 vs. 348) than the Sierra’s optional 2.7 turbo 4 cyl. The Titan XD’s 5.0 turbo V8 diesel produces 172 lbs.-ft. more torque (555 vs. 383) than the Sierra’s optional 5.3 V8. The Titan XD’s 5.0 turbo V8 diesel produces 95 lbs.-ft. more torque (555 vs. 460) than the Sierra SLT/AT4/Denali’s optional 6.2 V8.

Fuel Economy and Range Comparison

To lower fuel costs and make buying fuel easier, the Nissan Titan XD uses regular unleaded gasoline. The Sierra SLT/AT4/Denali requires premium for maximum efficiency, which can cost 20 to 55 cents more per gallon.

The Titan XD has 2 gallons more fuel capacity than the Sierra Double Cab/Crew Cab’s standard fuel tank (26 vs. 24 gallons), for longer range between fill-ups.

Suspension and Handling Comparison

For a smoother ride and more stable handling, the Titan XD Single Cab’s wheelbase is 13.3 inches longer than on the Sierra 1500 Standard Bed Regular Cab (139.8 inches vs. 126.5 inches).

Passenger Space Comparison

The Titan XD Crew Cab has .3 inches more rear headroom and .1 inches more rear hip room than the Sierra Crew Cab.

Cargo Capacity Comparison

The Nissan Titan XD has a standard tailgate assist feature, which prevents the heavy tailgate from falling with a crash and causing injury. It allows adults and children to easily open and close the tailgate with one hand to better facilitate loading and unloading. Tailgate assist costs extra on the GMC Sierra.

The Titan XD has stake post holes, to allow the containment of tall, light loads. The Sierra doesn’t offer stake post holes.

Ergonomics Comparison

The Titan XD’s front power windows open or close with one touch of the switches, making it more convenient at drive-up windows and toll booths, or when talking with someone outside of the car. The Sierra’s power windows’ front passenger window doesn’t close automatically.

The Titan XD’s standard speed-sensitive wipers speed up when the vehicle does, so that the driver doesn’t have to continually adjust the speed of the wipers. The Sierra’s manually variable intermittent wipers have to be constantly adjusted. The Titan XD’s optional wipers adjust their speed and turn on and off automatically according to the amount of rainfall on the windshield.
