In the past twenty years hundreds of infants and young children have died after being left in vehicles, usually by accident. When turning the vehicle off, drivers of the Versa SV/SR are reminded to check the back seat if they opened the rear door before starting out. The Corolla Hybrid doesn’t offer a back seat reminder.
Over 200 people are killed each year when backed over by motor vehicles. The Versa has standard Rear Automatic Braking that uses rear sensors to monitor and automatically apply the brakes to prevent a rear collision. The Corolla Hybrid doesn’t offer backup collision prevention brakes.
The Versa SV/SR’s blind spot warning system uses digital cameras monitored by computer to alert the driver to moving objects in the vehicle’s blind spots where the side view mirrors don’t reveal them. The Corolla Hybrid doesn’t offer a system to reveal objects in the driver’s blind spots.
To help make backing safer, the Versa SV/SR’s cross-path warning system uses wide-angle radar in the rear bumper to alert the driver to vehicles approaching from the side, helping the driver avoid collisions. The Corolla Hybrid doesn’t offer a cross-path warning system.
Both the Versa and the Corolla Hybrid have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, driver knee airbags, side-impact head airbags, front seatbelt pretensioners, front wheel drive, height adjustable front shoulder belts, four-wheel antilock brakes, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, crash mitigating brakes, lane departure warning systems, rearview cameras, available daytime running lights and driver alert monitors.
J.D. Power and Associates’ 2019 Initial Quality Study of new car owners surveyed provide the statistics that show that Nissan vehicles are better in initial quality than Toyota vehicles. J.D. Power ranks Nissan 7th in initial quality, above the industry average. With 4 more problems per 100 vehicles, Toyota is ranked 8th.
The Versa’s 1.6 DOHC 4 cyl. produces 1 more horsepower (122 vs. 121) and 8 lbs.-ft. more torque (114 vs. 106) than the Corolla Hybrid’s 1.8 DOHC 4 cyl. hybrid.
For better traction, the Versa SV’s tires are larger than the largest tires available on the Corolla Hybrid (205/55R16 vs. 195/65R15).
The Versa SR’s tires provide better handling because they have a lower 50 series profile (height to width ratio) that provides a stiffer sidewall than the Corolla Hybrid’s 65 series tires.
For better ride, handling and brake cooling the Versa SR has standard 17-inch wheels. The Corolla Hybrid’s largest wheels are only 15-inches.
The Versa has a standard easy tire fill system. When inflating the tires, the vehicle’s integrated tire pressure sensors keep track of the pressure as the tires fill and tell the driver when the tires are inflated to the proper pressure. The Corolla Hybrid doesn’t offer vehicle monitored tire inflation.
The Nissan Versa may be more efficient, handle and accelerate better because it weighs about 300 to 450 pounds less than the Toyota Corolla Hybrid.
The Versa is 5.3 inches shorter than the Corolla Hybrid, making the Versa easier to handle, maneuver and park in tight spaces.
The Versa has 1.2 inches more front headroom, 2.2 inches more front legroom and 6.2 inches more rear hip room than the Corolla Hybrid.
The Versa has a much larger trunk than the Corolla Hybrid (14.7 vs. 13.1 cubic feet).
The Versa SR has a standard remote vehicle starting system, so the vehicle can be started from inside the driver's house. This allows the driver to comfortably warm up the engine before going out to the vehicle. The climate system will also automatically heat or cool the interior. The Corolla Hybrid doesn’t offer a remote starting system.
The Versa SR offers optional heated front seats, which keep the driver and front passenger extremely comfortable in the winter. Heated seats aren’t available in the Corolla Hybrid.
